Objective

Horse Slaughter 101 tackles the issue of horse slaughter in America. While it is illegal to kill horses in America, it is legal to export them for slaughter—this causes many issues, including abuse. This installation is especially important to me because my aunt runs a horse rescue, so I wanted to spread awareness about this industry.

Process

I started off this project with a ton of research. All the information on the walls are of real kill pen horses I found being sold online. After collecting data, I started making my informational videos using real photos from the industry. I then took the videos and made a code to play it when my pressure plates (hidden under the ink trays) are stamped. I also carved my own stamp to make the installation more interactive.

Takeaway

This project was great practice in Experience Design! It took a lot of work to make the craft look clean, and it was quite a journey making custom walls to hang my designs on.  Another big thing I learned was how to be discreet and respectful with disturbing topics as I didn’t want to scare or overwhelm the viewer.
