Objective

“Compost Pal” is a theoretical waste management system that goes door to door collecting people’s compost. It turns organic waste into fertilizer, acts as an air purifier, and informs its community about the current air quality.

“Compost Pal” was created with the intention to improve air quality in Detroit. When our team learned how much methane landfills release due to organic material, we knew composting was the best solution to improving air quality on a local level.

Process

During our research phase, we coordinated interviews with several environmental experts in Detroit.. After defining what the problem was, we speculated several solutions before landing on “Compost Pal.”

We wanted to make composting convenient and beneficial. To do this, we turned “Compost Pal” into an air purifier, a tax-return opportunity, and we made it as friendly and approachable as possible. We also emphasized people’s privacy when talking about its navigation system.

Takeaway

“Compost Pal” was a great opportunity to practice lateral thinking in regards to branding. Our project looked into the future and predicted what solutions are likely to be made, and we designed around those solutions.
